Anticipating prison overcrowding, DOJ adds new "Trump Wing" to Rikers Island

NEW YORK -- On Thursday, Attorney General Preet Bharara announced that the Department of Corrections is adding a new "Trump Wing" to Rikers Island in an effort to combat prison overcrowding.

"Bringing the Trump family to justice is really going to test the resources of our federal penitentiary system," Bharara told reporters at a joint press conference with New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio.

"Law enforcement tells me that once everyone involved in the Trump campaign is prosecuted for conspiracy, campaign finance violations, perjury, obstruction of justice, and treason, we're going to face a severe housing shortage - unless we act now," he said.

DeBlasio said the State of New York is going to pour $155 million dollars into building Rikers' new cell block, which will have the capacity to imprison 34 "disgusting people," including failed GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, his son, Don Jr., Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, Jeff Sessions, Carter Page, Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Roger Stone, and Jared Kushner, among others.

Some officials worried that even with a Trump Wing, Rikers will struggle to incarcerate all the Trump campaign alumni convicted of multiple felonies.

"The sheer number of people is going to be a challenge. Next year, Rikers is going to look like the prison riot scene from Orange is the New Black, but where the cast of criminal characters is a lot more white, male, and fundamentally unloveable," said Elizabeth Glazer, director of the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. "Look, these people hail from the world of New York City real estate billionaires. We want to make sure they enjoy their stay with us,"

On Twitter, Donald Trump Jr. responded to news of Rikers new "Trump Wing" saying, "I love it," "This is way more on brand than Trump University," and "I'll proudly follow my father's footsteps into federal prison."
