Kim Jong-un sends autographed copy of Vogue to Pres. Hillary Clinton, his “best friend”
SEOUL -- The New York Times is reporting that the White House received what appears to be an fan package addressed to President Hillary Rodham Clinton from North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un on Tuesday morning, plunging the Washington's entire foreign policy apparatus into a state of geopolitical bafflement.
The package contained a single autographed copy of this month's Vogue Pyongyang, which features North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un wearing a black pantsuit on its cover, as well as a hand-written note in which the enigmatic young leader appears to describe Clinton as his "best friend," according to White House Press Secretary Leslie Jones.
Kim Jong-un, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, has appeared on the cover of Vogue Pyongyang in a pantsuit 12,457 consecutive times. Vogue Pyongyang is not an official Condé Nast publication.
The State Department said Thursday that officials were still racing to confirm the true provenance of the package, with basketball player Dennis Rodman and Vice News denying rumors that they were involved in conveying it to America.
Already, some State Department experts see this package as the latest indication of the Korean leader's rapidly-growing feelings of kinship with President Hillary Clinton.
"Based on what we know, this feels authentic," said Scott A. Snyder, Senior Fellow for Korea Studies and Director of the program on U.S.-Korea Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations.
The note reads: "Dear Hillary, I love your fashion sense. Indeed, if I may say so, I think you wear pantsuits better than my late father did. I miss him. But I hated him. You are my best friend. Will you be my best friend? Don't hurt my feelings or I will end the world."
The White House is mulling its response.
